- Dealing with Accidents What to do if a tooth is knocked out Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard while participating in contact sports will help protect against painful and potentially expensive dental injuries. However, if an accident does occur and a tooth is knocked out, this sheet outlines what to do to try and save a tooth and prepare it for dental treatment. If a tooth is knocked out, remain calm and act quickly. The following steps should be taken immediately: Locate the tooth and, handling it gently by the crown, ensure it is clean. The crown is the smooth white part of the tooth that is normally visible in the mouth. If the root of the tooth is dirty, and the patient is calm and conscious, ask them to gently suck the tooth clean. Alternatively, rinse the entire tooth in milk or very briefly, in water. Immediately place the tooth back in the socket making sure it is facing the right way. Immediate replacement is essential and should ideally occur within 5-10 minutes of the tooth being knocked out. Hold the tooth in place by biting gently into a soft cloth or by using aluminium foil placed over the tooth and the teeth on either side to stabilise the tooth. If you are unable to replant the tooth back in the socket, keep it moist by putting it in a cup of milk, sealing it in plastic wrap or placing it in the conscious patient's mouth, next to the cheek. Immediately Seek Dental Treatment! - Time is critical to prevent permanent damage. Extreme care should be taken with a tooth that has been knocked out. Avoid the following: Do not handle the root of the tooth. Do not scrape or rub the surface of the tooth. Do not let the tooth dry out - keep it moist at all times. Do not put the tooth in hot water or ice. Avoid rinsing or storing the tooth in water for more than one or two seconds. Do not remove any soft tissue fragments from the tooth.

- BENEFITS of CUSTOM FIT SPORTS MOUTHGUARDS ~Superior comfort~ Enhances confidence for peak performance while providing safety. ~Reduce injury, and ongoing dental and medical treatment fees ~Will not impede speech or breathing. ~Preserve function and cosmetics
- REASONS WHY YOU GET MORE PROTECTION, MORE COMFORT and MORE CHOICE WITH a CUSTOM BUILT MOUTHGUARD compared to a "boil and bite" mouthguard. Custom Built Mouthguard "Boil and Bite" Design: Your mouthguard will be designed and custom made for you. Design can be changed depending on your age and physical stature, the sport you play and the level of competition. Allows modification for your special needs such as orthodontic bands, irregularities to your teeth or bite, and missing teeth. Design: Design cannot change. Design is inflexible. You may be forced to wear an inappropriate mouthguard. Modification either severely limited or not possible. Manufacture: Custom made in a specialised laboratory under high heat and pressure. Manufacture: Injection moulded in a factory. Fit: Precise fit is vital for your mouthguard. A good custom built mouthguard will give you micron accurate fit that should provide a better cushioning effect, make it easier to breathe, make it easier to talk, provide more comfort and be easier to wear, make it more difficult to dislodge on impact and will allow you to concentrate and give you confidence when you wear it. Fit: It is difficult if not impossible to get a good fit with an 'over the counter' mouthguard. Poor fit may give you problems such as reduced protection, breathing difficulties, speech difficulties, less comfort, may be easily dislodged, can be ingested, you can be distracted and even your dentist cannot improve the retention in your mouth. Occlusal Table: The imprint of your lower jaw in your mouthguard is important because the risk of being concussed can be reduced, the risk of damage to your jaw joint (TMJ) can be reduced, the risk of fracturing your jaw can be reduced, there is a better spread of impact and it helps protect your bottom teeth. Occlusal Table: There is no occlusal table and therefore there is a greater risk of injury. Testing: Independent University tests have proved that, correctly constructed, this type of mouthguard may provide more protection than any other. Testing: Test protocols have not objectively measured the total function of a "Boil and Bite" mouthguard. Construction: Custom built results in a total bonded mouthguard that gives more protection but without discomfort. Construction: Some "Boil and Bite" mouthguards have hard inserts that can break off. Many "Boil and Bite" mouthguards are too soft or too thin. Approval: Recommended by national dental associations worldwide. Approval: Not recommended/preferred by national dental association. No universal approval. Conclusion: The 3 vital advantages of a custom built mouthguard are more comfort, more choice and most importantly, more protection. Conclusions: A "Boil and Bite" mouthguard provides less comfort, less choice and most importantly, less protection. - THE IMPORTANCE OF A PROFESSIONAL GRADE MOUTHGUARD Three kinds of mouth guards. Depending on design and material used, they vary in fit, rate of protection, ease of maintenance, longevity, and cost. • Ready made or stock mouth guards. These are usually found and sold in sporting goods store and are usually a "one size fits all" mouth guard. These mouth guards are the least expensive but they also offer the least protection because of their poor fit. They are usually made of rubber or polyvinyl material. The most they do is provide a false sense of security. • Boil and bite mouth guards. Also sold in sporting goods stores. They usually come in a u-shaped mass of thermo-plastic material that becomes soft when placed in hot water. When soften, the user places them in their mouths and they bite their teeth together to form the mouth guard, thus the name "boil and bite". These mouth guards provide minimum protection because of the dramatic decrease in thickness when the athlete bites into it during its softened state. At the very most they are slightly better than the stock mouth guards as they fit a little better. However, they are usually bulky and cumbersome. they also interfere with the breathing and speaking ability of the user. However: 1. Biting too hard into the softened Boil & Bite can cause thin spots or holes, as a result of biting through the material. (Poor Fit). 2. Biting into the single layer Boil & Bite does not offer total tooth coverage. (Inadequate Protection). 3. Biting into the “one size fits all” Boil & Bite can distort the guard and interfere with the tongue. (Restricted Breathing and Speech). • Custom Made Mouthguards Professional-grade mouth guards by a dentist. Although it cost more than all other mouth guards, these are the best because they are made from a dental impression taken by a dentist. It offer superior fit and they provide the best protection and unrestricted comfort as they are tailored to the demands of the athlete and the sport The Custom Made Mouthguard is: Heat and pressure formed over a model of the athlete’s teeth, providing Superior Fit. You no longer have to clench your teeth to keep the mouthguard in place. Streamline Designed for minimal tongue interference, allowing for Unrestricted Breathing and Clear Speech. It reduce the likelihood of Chipping, breaking, loss of teeth Neck and jaw injuries Laceration of the tongue, lips, and cheeks Concussion VALUE Custom Fit Mouthguards cost more than Boil & Bites because they are WORTH MORE. When one considers that, “a great number of dental sports injuries result in lifetime dental costs It is surprising that coaches and parents are not more aware of the considerable benefits of Custom Fit Mouth guards To prevent such injuries, a Custom Fitted Professional-grade Mouth guard is a MUST !!!
